His primary focus is an investigation into the nature of reality, and to this end he interviews people from diverse disciplines.
In this installment, he begins with a synthesis of Rupert’s analogy of the dream in order to explain the relationship among consciousness, the self, and reality. Rupert then talks about his early encounter with classical Advaita and Mevlevi turning, which he continued studying for twenty years on a path he now describes as devotional.
As a potter who spent his days making objects, Rupert experienced a conflict between the teachings he was following in his search for truth, which required a turning away from the world, and this exploration of his love of beauty.
It was only when he met the non-dual teacher Francis Lucille, whose own teacher, Jean Klein, had also taught yoga and did not reject the body, that Rupert came to see how the love of truth and the love of beauty were the same, fused in an inclusive path. It is from this understanding that all Rupert’s teachings flow.
Allen asks if the contemporary scientific view, revealing the interconnectedness of our bodies with the universe, can come together with the non-dual understanding and make it flourish. He inquires whether there is any point of synthesis between cosmology and the big bang, and consciousness as first principle.
Rupert maintains that the idea that we are a body is a presumption. If we investigate our experience, not only do we see that perception and conception come and go, but that ultimately everything, from the vast complexity of the universe to our experience of a ‘physical body’, can only be arising within, and as an expression of, awareness.
